Nestled in the rolling hillside just outside Harrisonburg, Virginia in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley is a mecca for book lovers called the Green Valley Book Fair. Here you can find more than 30,000 titles in 60 different categories at incredible bargain prices—often at 90% off retail value.
I began going to the book fair while in college, when it was housed in a simple barn. Now, the venue is composed of two large climate-controlled buildings covering 25,000 square feet and stocked with books of all types. The book fair isn’t fancy, so don’t expect a Barnes & Noble-type experience. But there are some creature comforts like snacks, benches and a few chairs.
The Green Valley Book Fair was founded in 1971 and throughout the years has both grown and evolved. Starting out with mainly textbooks, it now features a large children’s section filled with books and toys, and book on cooking, crafts, games, novels, nonfiction, self help, history, religion, science, sports, nature…and more.

The Green Valley Book Fair is Only Open Certain Weeks
The one catch about the Green Valley Book Fair is that it is only open six times a year for several weeks at a time. The current session runs through July 23, 2019, with the next dates running August 17-September 8. Check online for their upcoming schedule.
Special Events at the Green Valley Book Fair
Throughout the year, the Green Valley Book Fair hosts special events, ranging from story times to visits from Santa. In 2019, its scheduled includes an Easter Egg Hunt, Safety Day, Celebration of America, Ag Day, Book-or-Treat, and a Holiday Open House. Adventure Tales features story time in the newly-renovated children’s area. Exciting books are read, and songs are led by the book fair’s own Ms. J. Adventure Tales are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM and Saturday at 1:00 PM except for opening days.
There’s even a bookmark contest, with one contest for those in 6th grade and older, and a Children’s
Bookmark contest for those younger than 6th grade. The winners are featured in the next year’s bookmarks and the grand prize winners each receive a $150 Green Valley Book Fair gift certificate!
During book fair days, you’ll also find local vendors out front selling refreshments like hot dogs and pastries.
